Community Service Activity
As you remember in order to receive a
passing grade in this course you must either complete a community
service activity or complete a final research paper. The information
below is designed to help get you started on the community service
activity. Information on the research paper will be distributed at a
later date.
What is community service?
Community service is an activity
that you volunteer for that in some way benefits members of you
community. Community service is NOT meant to benefit for profit
organizations and businesses. Working is NOT community service.
Community service includes activities such as:
- volunteering in a
hospital.
- volunteering in a local
lawmakers office.
- volunteering in a youth
center or day care center.
- volunteering in a local
community center like a library.
- volunteering to work with
children, tutoring or coaching.
See the attached list as a
partial resource of possible community service locations. Please feel
free to be original and seek out new locations and ideas.
How do I find out if my
community service activity is acceptable?
All students must receive my
signature on their community service logs before beginning service.
This way I know and you know if it is acceptable.
How much time do I have to
volunteer?
The community service time
requirement is 25 hours.
When does my community
service have to be done?
Community service does not
include volunteer work done prior to January 29th.
You must do all 25 hours between January 31, 2000 and June 5, 2000.
Can I get paid for my
community service?
Generally the answer would be no.
The idea here is to volunteer your time to help out, not to get a
job. There may be some situations where payment may be acceptable.

How do I show that I
have successfully completed my community service?
Have your service supervisor or
contact fill out and sign the attached sheet.
What other requirements do
I have to fulfill?
All students must write a 2-3
page typed report describing and evaluating their experience. The
report should include the following:
- You prejudgments about the
service activity.
- A thorough description of the
activity.
- An evaluation of the activity
and its effectiveness in the community.
- What you got out of
participating in a community service activity (besides a passing
grade!)
